Reasons women in music and art are often overlooked

Some might say that it's purely a matter of statistics, ie. more men are involved in the making of electronic music than women so it stands that more of them would get exposure. This is a logical point, but what this logic fails to address is the importance of the female contribution to the arts.
Women do experience the world differently from men, and so the music and art they create is highly unique. For most of history, we've seen the world through the eyes of men, and if we are
to be a part of creating a more progressive future, it's imperative that we as a world begin to perceive the importance of woman's expression.
Persistence on the part of the artist and faith in their own vision plays a huge role in the amount of exposure they receive, the dilemma here is that it's historically been crude for women to push their own agenda. If things are going to change though, allowing ourselves to be more aggressive in promoting ourselves is an essential part of making our voices heard.
Many cultures tend to normalize the male figure as being superior by default, and this often times implies that if women are equal or superior then it can be perceived as a direct blow to a significant part of what popular/mainstream culture demands of them. It needs to be understood that the creation and reception of art and music need not be about ego, but about the sharing of human perspective which is much needed in this precarious time of human history.

  1. to work on writing a manifesto it is useful to refere to all the stages being involved to finally bring musicians on stage:) - as it is a political debate

i prefer starting from the beginning:

    interest in music
    education, familiar background, reception
    media
infrastructure - soft-hardware, practice rooms, parties, equipment, webspace, ....
    peer groups
    networking
production (comp, arrangem, studio, master, pressing)
    presentation
    pr
    promotion
    booking
    representation

the questions are similar to the one - which I take from the book: frauen in den medien, beiträge zur feministischen theorie und praxis 61:

    communication is social action -
means presentation and representation of individual, social and cultural meanings are constructed.

    UTILIZATION:
who is using media/music and how? is there a difference between boys and girls? if yes: why? who prefers which media/music? who has access and competences?

    CONTENT:
what is transmitted and how? also music transfers context and content. which messages are transported. (lyrics, artwork, video, pict, reviews ...)
how will in this field gender be constituted and constructed. and which ideologies are feeded and fulfilled here?

    PRODUCTION:
which roles play male and female participants in this field of musicproduction? which fields of work are mainly done by women or man: like booking, bar, kassa, desing, technic, pr, sticking posters, being on stage, ......
which workingconditions do the participants find?

referring to this music and media do not only picture the so called Wirklichkeit (reality) - music and media construct gender and so it can change it!!!!

    best

  2. it would be nice to set up a forum that addresses these issues so we can have a running debate and a way to refer back to viewpoints. thank you chra for taking the time to define all of these issues, and raising awareness that they need further clarification. does anyone know how to set up a forum, or have experience with it?
